Support Every American's Right to Free Internet Access

"It is unacceptable that the United States ranks fifteenth in the world in broadband adoption. Here, in the country that invented the Internet, every child should have the chance to get online, and they'll get that chance when I'm President -- because that's how we'll strengthen America's competitiveness in the world."
- President Obama, December 6, 2008 weekly address

Act Now! Tell the government that every American has a right to equal access to free broadband in their communities. The September 30, 2010 deadline is fast approaching!

Zip Code:

100 million Americans do not have broadband access at home because it is NOT affordable.

Today, broadband is a privilege. All Americans deserve the right to have equal access. Free broadband access would support economic development, enhance educational opportunities and create approximately 200,000 jobs under the current plan.

The Government's Broadband Plan is Short on Action
There have been years of promises about free broadband, starting with President Bush and continuing with President Obama. Under the Obama administration, the FCC created the National Broadband Plan, an important step that would provide for broadband for everyone by 2020. It states:

"Everyone in the United States today should have access to broadband services supporting a basic set of applications that include sending and receiving e-mail, downloading Web pages, photos and video, and using simple video conferencing."

The FCC and Congress Need to Act NOW
To enable free broadband, the FCC must vote to make the airwaves available for this purpose BEFORE the September 30, 2010 deadline. Congress can push them toward this goal. Senator Jay Rockefeller (D, WVA), Head of the Senate Commerce Committee, challenged the FCC to deliver innovative solutions at an April 14, 2010 oversight hearing.

"I am going to challenge the FCC to make the hard choices that will help bring broadband to every corner of this country. Putting ideas on paper is not enough. Just seeking comment on a slew of issues is not enough. It's action that counts."
- Sen. Rockefeller
